REVIEW OF BREWERY CHRISTMAS CAROL FROM WESTMORLAND GAZETTE | 1st January, 2009 | Mirth and merriment galore in the Brewery Arts Centre Christmas cracker
10:30am Friday 12th December 2008
By Adrian Mullen »
ONE of the main and magical ingredients of the Brewery pantomime is the cast.
Oh yes it is… Each year (apart from 2007, when there wasn’t one) it’s more or less the same jolly bunch of professional players who beat a path to the Kendal arts centre.
“It’s like coming home,” exclaims the enchanting Deborah Bouchard, in the glittering line-up once again, and welcoming me to rehearsals.
A (Brewery) Christmas Carol runs from tonight (Friday) December 12 until January 10.
Basically it’s the same story that Dickens’ told – with a few inventive, hysterical, present-day revisions added along the way.
It goes something like this… It is Christmas Eve and all’s not well in London town.
The scene I see features the Ghost of Christmas Present who takes Scrooge to check out what’s going down at the Crachit’s place as the family gathers.
Babs Crachit is climbing the walls having just found out that hubbie Bob has been given his marching orders by Scrooge.
Apparently, it was ‘Take your child to work day’ and Bob had taken Tiny Tim with him.
Hard-hearted Scrooge fired him.
“How we going to pay the bills,” wails Babs.
“It’s all my fault,” claims Tiny Tim.
In drops Scrooge’s niece, Fred (played by Deborah Bouchard) trying once more to get her uncle invited for Christmas dinner.
“She’s a suffragette in men’s clothing,” Brewery chief executive Sam Mason whispers as we watch the cast rehearse.
As usual Sam’s written the script, laced with some of the most infectious original tunes you will come across penned by Richard Allen.
I have to hand it to Sam, who also directs the show; he can certainly put on a panto, brimming with quick-fire, hilarious one-liners, with contemporary issues woven into the classic tale.
“It’s fairly close to the original story, only as much as what we usually do,” explains Sam.
“But there’s a serious element to the script,” he adds.
One example is the mention of ‘Carrots,’ the nickname of a young chap who apparently inspired Thomas Barnardo to set-up his first care home for vulnerable and neglected children in east London in 1867.
Sam has a flair for taking the traditional and standing it on its head.
And in the true spirit of Brewery pantomimes he’s created a Christmas cracker, guaranteed to have the punters falling about laughing. As for the music… I was given a taster of Your Doomed, a real rocker that has former Tears for Fears drummer Manny Elias in blistering form.
As well as Manny, the top-notch melody makers include musical director Alex Silverman on keyboards, Michael Woodward, guitars, and brass players James Perkins and Jonathan Vince.
Next, I was treated to a rendition of The Children of London, a real big production number, with Duncan Johnston, who plays Bob Crachit, opening the singing.
As well as a fine actor, Duncan is a true balladeer and has a good voice.
The song is a stirring, slow burner that builds, and builds and – Wow, in comes Jane Harrington, new this year to the Brewery, persuaded by fellow opera singer Martin Lamb to partake in a dose of panto.
Uncertain at first at taking part in a panto, Jane tells me the deal was sealed after reading Sam’s quality script.
Soprano Jane nearly knocks my socks off - with her voice that is.
Like Martin, Jane’s vocal chords add another dimension to the show.
Classically trained at the London’s Royal Academy of Music, Jane has worked with the English National and Scottish operas, and exchanged the role of Adele in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus for Belle Ringer in Sam’s seasonal spectacle.
“I’m really looking forward to having a great time,” says Jane, beaming and ready for opening night.
Returning for the second time is Bekah Sloan, fresh from a stint in a big variety show, Smoke and Mirrors, staged in Liverpool.
She played Wendy at the Brewery in Peter Pan in 2005.
This time around Bekah plays a Crachitt - Betty, the “Eastenders enforcer,” according to Sam. “The bare knuckles fight champion.”
Scary!
So is the ghost of Scrooge’s former partner, Jacob Marley, who drops in on the miserly moneylender to warn him to change his ways or be doomed.
Marley is played by another highly accomplished actor Andrew James Davies, who banters superbly with Martin Lamb as Ebenezer Scrooge; Scrooge is struggling with the credit crunch and watching his investments in the British banking system collapse around him.
Bah! Humbug.
Among the rising stars in the production are local actors Joe Greenwood, who stunned many by his performance as Kojo in the Brewery Youth Theatre production of Fugee, and Sarah Brett, another burgeoning young talent, with a formidable stage presence.
Now, you thought I’d forgotten, didn’t you?
Oh no I hadn’t...
Last, but certainly, not least, Helen Moffitt, doyenne of dance on one hand; blessed with a sense of comic timing that has audiences in stitches on the other.
Helen plays Tiny Tim.
To sum up, a fine feast of festive entertainment served up in grand style.
Just one more thing – look out behind you! .:comments (0) :: .:email to friend |

It's That Time Of The Year Again! | 1st November, 2005 | Yep, the days get shorter and the nights get longer and Deborah heads back to Kendal for her 3rd season at The Brewery Arts Centre. This year she plays a leather clad, evil pirate called Cecco in Peter Pan:The Return Of Captain Hook. Deborah said:
"I'm really looking forward to going back to Kendal, The Brewery is a great place to work....There should be lots of action in this years show coupled with ,as usual, the wit of a good script and original music...I'm sure that myself, the cast and crew, musicians and audience will all have alot of fun this year!"
The story begins with Captain Hook having been missing for two years, chased away by the merciless crocodile. In his absence the pirates have gotten lazy, and with nobody left to fight the Lost Boys start watching daytime TV. Influenced by the constant streaming fodder of cookery programmes, Peter Pan decides he wants to be a celebrity chef,
and trades in his sword for pots and pans. He becomes a Master Chef but unfortunately he eats most of what he cooks. He may never grow up, but he can certainly grow outwards - and grow he does.
Then, unexpectedly, Captain Hook returns, exhausted and bedraggled but with a shiny new pair of crocodile shoes. He embarks upon a campaign of mayhem and revenge across Neverland, but Peter is just too fat and lazy to do anything about it.
In desperation the two fairies, the somewhat naughty Tink and oh so perfect Belle, seek out the Darling children once again to try to inspire Peter to become his former fairytale flying self.
Will they succeed in getting Peter back in shape or will Hook finally triumph over Neverland with the aid of a deep pan pizza?
The Brewery Pantomime sees the return of many of your favourite performers from previous years. Simon Yaxley (Widow Twanky, Ugly Sister, Dame Trott and Lakeland Radio) will play the
bumbling Bosun Smee. Helen Moffitt and Lucy Tuck (Policemen Ping and Pong) are back as Tink and Belle, and Deborah Bouchard (Genie, Prince Charming) will play the ambitious, scheming, but most importantly, leather clad, evil pirate Cecco. With some fabulous new faces amongst the excellent professional cast, Peter Pan will certainly be the must see show for all
the family this Christmas. .:comments (4) :: .:email to friend |
